How Do You Create the Best Presentation?

At some point in your career, you’ll be asked to make a presentation. It could be to pitch an idea to the Board; it could be to deliver the results of some work that your team has been doing; it could be a presentation to promote what your company does.

Whatever the reason, you need to think about the best way to deliver your message, so that it comes across clearly and concisely. Put in some time to plan and prepare your presentation, to get the best effect.

There are three distinct parts for any presentation:

An Attention Grabbing Opening. If you learn your opening line, you’ll find it easier to remember the rest of your message. Keep it short and to the point and say something that makes your audience sit up and listen. A great way to start any presentation is with a simple ABCD structure. It will help you make a strong opening and deal with any nerves you have. I’ve created a short video that you can watch, that explains how to use the ABCD, so click here to watch it.

The Body of the Talk. Use the words must, should and could to help you gather the right information for the presentation. Collect it in a way that works for you, whether that’s a mind map, images or dozens of Post It notes, to bring all the details together. Think about what must be covered in your talk, what should be discussed and what could be included. Cover them in that order, creating a new paragraph or bulletin point for each area.

The Close. You need to finish well, so have one last thing to say – a final message for your audience to remember and take away at the end of your presentation. Think of it as the sound bite that echoes around the room as s they are leaving. Say your sound bite clearly. Ask your audience if they have any questions and when you’ve finished answering them, say your sound bite again. Do this before the organiser jumps in to thank you. Always have the last word! If you do, your words will be the ones that are remembered.

Use this structure the next time you’re putting together a presentation and you’ll be able to deliver your message in a really clear, effective way.
