Three Top Tips for using Belbin Team Roles

There are many tools that you can use to improve how teams of people work together. Belbin Team Roles is just one of them and I wrote about the different roles in my previous blog.

When you know what sort of team member you are and where your strengths and weaknesses lie, there are a number of ways in which you canput that information to good use:

 

1. Focus your time and energy. We all have limited time and energy, so it’s better if you can use that time and energy to look at how to build on your strengths rather than trying to fix your weaknesses. Instead of spending time trying to develop one of your weaknesses, so that you become mediocre at doing a specific task, delegate the task to someone in the team better placed to do it quickly, so that you can focus on doing what you’re good at.

 

2. Build on your strengths. How much time is spent focusing on strengths and how much time is spent looking at weaknesses, during annual appraisals or performance reviews? Too much focus is put on what needs to be improved. However, the focus should be on finding out what you’re good at and looking for more opportunities to spend time doing what you can do well. Create a plan that will help you to get even better at what you’re good at, rather than spending time on what you’re not good at.

 

3. Change your ‘to do’ list. Most ‘to do’ lists are actually lists of all the tasks that you don’t want to do! All the things that you do want to do have probably been done already, because you enjoy doing them and can do them quickly. The tasks that you don’t want to do, or that you find harder to do, or that someone else says you have to do, need to be put onto a list, to encourage you to do them!

 

When you understand your strengths you can look for ways of making them even stronger, and ways in which you can fill in the gaps left by your weaknesses.

 

I use Belbin Team Roles to help some of my clients to see the differences between the people within their teams. Each person goes through the indicator and then we compare the results of the whole team. Looking at one profile on its own won’t help a team to work together more effectively.

 

 

We draw picture for each team to see, for example, if they have too many Plants and no Completer Finishers. If this is how a team is made up, plenty of ideas will be generated, but none of them will be seen through to completion. By bringing together the individual reports of all the team members, we can see the strengths of the team and also where the gaps are, that will need to be filled, if the team is to be highly effective.

 

Teams are made up of people with different strengths and weaknesses, so it is important to celebrate those differences and look for the blind spots that could slow progress down. Teams that work by design rather than by accident will achieve so much more.
